Company News Reliant Supports AAC Anodizing Conference

aac conference

Reliant was proud to be a Gold Level sponsor at the 18th Annual International Anodizing Conference & Exposition hosted by the Aluminum Anodizers Council. The conference was held October 6-8 in Fort Worth, Texas, and fosters greater cooperation and support within the anodizing community. This year's event combined popular features and an enhanced program to provide top-quality education and networking opportunities for a well-rounded experience.

Representatives from Reliant and Clariant conducted anodizing workshops and participated in technical focus sessions spanning such topics as:

Coloring Technology
Mark Jozefowicz, Reliant VP - Technical Services

Coloring technologies are remarkably varied and communicating color is one of the principal challenges to anyone in this industry. Architectural and decorative coloring techniques were covered in the anodizing workshop, along with an introduction to interference and decomposition technologies. Problem-solving and troubleshooting were also addressed.

Fundamentals of Sealing
Chris Ebbrecht, Reliant Technical Sales Agent
Eastern Anodic and Color Inc.

This process closes the pores in the anodic film, yielding a surface that is resistant to staining, abrasion, crazing and color degradation. The fundamentals of the sealing process were explored in this workshop, with a view toward learning how to select the best process for the job at hand.

Thin Film Anodizing – Novel Structures and Applications
Mark Jozefowicz, Reliant VP - Technical Services

It is well known that the structure of an anodized aluminum coating is related to the process conditions used to create it. To be able to develop new and interesting materials by simply varying electro-chemical parameters while anodizing has intrigued scientists for decades. The Anopore™ membrane is a market successful application which grew out of such a development. Low cost thin film coatings with unique structures can also be created by anodizing aluminum and applied in unusual ways. When combined with chemical metallization to produce vibrant interference colors, an entirely new set of applications are attainable. This scientific focus session included a discussion of electro-chemical techniques used to create such materials and their application. Prototype examples that have been created on a continuous anodize line were also on display.

New Developments in Green Chemistry, Colorants and OEM Relationships
Mark Self and Markus Kleinert, Clariant Corporation

OEMs that outsource their aluminum finishing overseas, while maintaining design and engineering functions onshore, are encountering finish quality and reproducibility problems. Clariant has responded with a centralized OEM support platform, establishing a new product and technology development lab and partnering with regional distributors. This technology forum described the new business model and focused on recent product and technology developments in "Green" chemistry, novel colorants and durable polysilazane coatings for anti-graffiti applications.
